Llamas

Learn first hand about these gentle, intelligent curious camelids. Llamas are healthy, hearty animals that possess no known illnesses transferable to humans. Curious, highly intelligent, gentle and calming animals, their serene nature makes them easy for anyone, including children, to handle. You, too, can experience the qualities of these unique animals with a visit from Lenny & Vince at your location. Read on to learn more about llamas and how you can arrange to see them up close.

Humble Creatures

A common concern is that llamas spit. This behavior is normally used between llamas to divert annoying suitors, to ward off a perceived threat or to establish pecking order at mealtime. A llama that has been mistreated by humans might spit at a person. The Radeschis’ llamas, nor those they know owned by caring individuals, have never spit at a human.

Lenny, Vince, and The Radeschis

When Loretta and George Radeschi purchased two llamas in 2006 as companions for their horse, Buddy, little did they realize the impact Leonardo and daVinci (aka Lenny and Vince) would have on their lives.
If the axiom “we are transformed by what we love,” is true, its is easy to be changed by these curious, gentle, calming, intelligent, and trusting animals.
The Radeschis eagerly share their enthusiasm about llamas with others. It’s a rare day that Loretta, especially, doesn’t talk about them to people she meets in stores and in the post office, at the supermarket, restaurants, library, farmer’s market, bank, and anywhere else when she’s out and about.
Loretta and George intend to keep their herd small, so they can concentrate on interacting daily with them. Their llamas are highly socialized and curious about people.

Interacting With Llamas

There is a lot to know about these wonderful animals. These are only a few characteristics of them.

  • They enjoy walks in the woods and along country roads
  • Their hooves are gentle to fields and the forest
  • They are excellent companions for horses
  • They guard sheep and other livestock
  • They are excellent pack animals
  • They can drive carts
  • They march in parades
  • They entertain and educate at community events
  • Their fleece can be used for felting or spun to be knitted, woven, or crocheted
  • Their large expressive eyes and gentle ways can lift anyone’s spirit
  • They are recognized for their lineage, fleece, and conformation at llama association shows

Uses of Fleece

An added bonus to owning llamas is the use of their soft, high quality fleece. Leonardo’s and daVinci’s fleece received 2nd and 4th place, respectively, at the 2007 Greater Appalachian Llama Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This led Loretta to consider ways of using their fleece and, like the animals themselves, sharing it with others.
From that Loretta and her friend, Kathy Matolyak have crafted hand-felted decorations. Stars, angels, gingerbread men, stockings, and snowmen are only a few of these creations. To see what is currently available for purchase, check here.
